Santa Clarita has grown into a strong and vibrant community because of the many people who have invested their time, talents and energy into making this a great place to live, work and raise a family.... One person I have known for more than 20 years who has demonstrated many of those characteristics is Gloria Mercado-Fortine.

As a two-term mayor and 10-year councilmember of the city of Santa Clarita, I believe I am in a good position to know what it takes to be a successful council member. One has to be very active in most aspects of our community. One has to ask lots of questions and in return be a good listener. One has to have a proven track record of working with others collaborating to create consensus. Nothing gets done with one person. It takes a minimum of three votes on the council to get anything done. That means having a good working relationship with council members. It means working with city staff, especially the city manager, to get anything done.

For approximately four years, I have had the opportunity to observe Gloria Mercado-Fortine in our community, and I am proud to support and endorse her for Santa Clarita City Council District 2. I have seen Gloria at community events, educational meetings and gatherings focused on the future of Santa Clarita. Rain or shine, she is present. When the conversation is about education, preserving our community’s history, strengthening neighborhoods or creating a safer and better Santa Clarita, Gloria is there.
What stands out to me is that Gloria’s commitment is not based simply on promises. She has spent years being involved, listening and working within the community.

Gloria Mercado-Fortine spent 37 years in education, including years as a principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent in large urban school districts. Anyone who has managed a school system that size knows what it takes to run a budget under real pressure: competing demands, tight reserves and the discipline to keep operations accountable while still delivering for the people you serve. That is the same skill set a city needs at the council level, and it is not something you can fake or learn on the job.
Nick Lentini and Gloria Mercado-Fortine were named 2018 Santa Clarita Valley Man and Woman of the Year at the annual recognition dinner Friday evening in Valencia.
This year marked the 54th recognition event for volunteers who have given outstanding charitable service to the SCV.
Mercado-Fortine was nominated for her volunteer work with Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers Inc.
“This is unbelievable,” said Mercado-Fortine.
